Poás Volcano features a main crater measuring up to 1.5 kilometers wide and 320 meters (1,050 feet) deep. The national park limits entry to 1,064 visitors daily. Tickets require mandatory advance online booking through the SINAC website. You cannot buy walk-up tickets.

Due to active volcanic gases, visitors receive safety helmets and face a strict 20-minute limit at the main viewpoint. Temperatures drop significantly at this altitude, so pack a warm jacket. A clear view is most likely during the dry season from December through April.
